I was in the mood for something simple and satisfying for lunch. I ended up at Mythos near Stauffacher. When you walk in, you can’t help wondering what to make of the big black and white mural. It looks like a winged, draped figure; probably something from Greek mythology. The atmosphere is relaxed and works well for a walk-in lunch.

I ordered the chicken souvlaki with pita and a Greek salad. The food is simple and tasty. The chicken was tender, and dipping the pita in the tzatziki was especially delicious. The portion was just right for lunch.

The meal came to a total of CHF 36, which definitely feels expensive. They charge CHF 3 to “upgrade” from French fries to the Greek salad. That feels steep given the amount of salad you get.

All in all, it was a good lunch. Simple, tasty and easy. I’d come back but only occasionally, because the price feels a little high for how straightforward the meal is.

Every now and again, I get cravings for Ichiran (tonkotsu ramen). That’s why I went back to Ooki in Wiedikon (Zentralstrasse 53).

From the outside Ooki doesn’t look like much. When you walk in, you’re greeted with a friendly “Irasshaimase”, which means welcome in Japanese. The tables and chairs are low. Space is tight. The kitchen is open with the staff and chefs working right in front of you. There’s even a tatami room. Together, it gives the place the feel of a proper izakaya. The only thing missing is a cloud of cigarette smoke. But that’s a good thing.

As expected, the tonkotsu ramen hits you with a deep, nutty flavour. Rich and thick. The noodles are firm. The eggs are cooked perfectly (still a bit runny inside). The chashu is tender and full of flavour. A tip: add a dash of the white vinegar. It cuts through the broth and adds a nice contrast.

For me, this is still the best tonkotsu ramen in Zurich. The guy sitting next to me agreed and said the Wiedikon branch is the best one.

Ooki is best for anyone craving proper Japanese food, especially ramen. It’s also great if you’re into Japanese curries and gyozas. I’d come here for lunch or a casual dinner. Book ahead, as it can get busy. The price feels fair by Zurich standards (CHF 26 for the tonkotsu).
